Worcester Area College Mentoring Program

We've turned the page on our calendars and are excited to see September on the other side. September comes with fresh beginnings, a refreshing sense of hope, new goals, and so much excitement in the air! At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass & Metrowest, many of our site-based programs resume their busy activities.

We also love September, because it means our college Bigs are back in town! As they are arriving at their schools, setting up their dorms, re-connecting with friends, and getting settled into their class schedules - we are eagerly awaiting to see them again! BBBS of CM & MW has about 700 college students that volunteer as Bigs at our five different colleges (Assumption College, Clark University, College of the Holy Cross, Nichols College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute). Each school manages the mentoring program uniquely. For example, Holy Cross has a large student athlete program, Assumption College is the only on-campus program while students from other colleges visit local elementary and middle schools, and Clark University funds multiple field trips throughout the year. Each program is special in its own way and we are fortunate to be involved with each one.

The Worcester Area College Mentoring Program (WACMP) began in 2000 after a tragic accident involving a Holy Cross student, John Price. As a way to honor John, his lacrosse team known as John's Brothers, became Big Brothers through Big Brothers Big Sisters. Years later, and the lacrosse team is still involved and the program has not only grown at Holy Cross but to our five other local colleges.

We are looking forward to beginning our 19th year of mentorship with local college students and our Littles! If you have questions about WACMP, you may contact Katie Roy or call 508-868-4941.

We provide children with caring role models.

When children and teens have the influence of a caring adult, they are more likely to avoid risky behaviors and to focus on academics. Today's youth face a variety of challenges, and being matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister can help them navigate these challenges and reach their potential.
