Agency News

November 2020

Hello Friends,

We hope you are enjoying the month and eagerly awaiting the holiday season. Although, some may argue, the holiday season has been here for several weeks now! Our matches have been enjoying as many outdoor activities as possible before it is more difficult to do so. We've seen matches getting lost in corn mazes, picking apples, exploring new hiking areas, and getting creative with new crafts. It has been so fun to see and hear about!

Just several weeks ago, we hosted our first-ever virtual event, The Big Night In. It was a BIG success and we are so grateful to everyone who participated. You can view it anytime on our Youtube page. The live broadcast starts at minute 23:00. We are also preparing for the holiday season and providing as many resources as possible to our dedicated volunteers as we move into colder weather.

We hope you enjoy reading about our Match Spotlight and Program Highlight below. Thank you for taking the time to read our November newsletter and for standing with us to defend the potential of over 1,000 children!

Warm Regards,
The Team at Big Brothers Big Sisters

Match Spotlight

Meet one of our new matches - Sekienna and Kiah. They were matched with each other in August and we're happy to see them already making great memories together. Kiah is 13 years old and they are matched in our Community Mentoring Program. Since being matched, they enjoy weekly phone and video chats, and planning an outing each month involving some of Kiah's favorite things like chicken wings, root beer floats, and house tours. Sekienna told us that, "In our time together, I've learned that Kiah is a resilient young lady with so much to say. I especially enjoy providing a listening ear, and look forward to the future of our connection."

Recently, Sekienna read the Match Activities Newsletter that we email each month to our Bigs and was inspired to take Kiah to the Harding Allen Estate in Barre for a pumpkin carving festival. Sekienna and Kiah enjoyed the drive to Barre, walking around the property, and viewing all the festive pumpkins!

Program Highlight

We are excited to share with you our newest program that we recently launched called GEM (Girls E-STEAM Mentoring)! This program will match Little Sisters in Middle School and expose them to the STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) by matching them with a mentor who is a STEAM professional. Matches will meet virtually via Microsoft Teams once a week. The mission of our new GEM program is to provide Little Sisters with a mentor who can give them an example of what a career in the STEAM field looks like in hopes of creating a pipeline of girls into the STEAM field.

How It Works:

  • Girls in middle school who are interested in STEAM are matched with a woman in the STEAM field
  • Matches meet virtually via Microsoft Teams once a week
  • Matches meet in person once a quarter (depending on COVID) to do a STEAM activity
  • Big Sister shares their day to day and current career along with how they chose this career path and the steps that it took to pursue this career

If you are a woman in a STEAM field and interested in mentoring a young girl, let us know! For more info, email Courtney.Evans@bbbscm.org.

Stand With Us Today to Defend Potential

When children and teens have the influence of a caring adult, they are more likely to avoid risky behaviors and to focus on academics. Today's youth face a variety of challenges, and being matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister can help them navigate these challenges and reach their potential.
