Meet Soreya and Jennie!

Soreya and Jennie

We're thrilled to introduce you to our Match Highlight of the Month, Soreya and Jennie! Soreya was seven years old when she was matched with her Big, Jennie. Soreya was looking for someone dedicated just to her so she could play and have special time for herself. Now, she is ten years old! Jennie decided to volunteer as a Big to get more involved in the community and have a bigger impact on the people around her. Soreya and Jennie are part of our Community-Based Mentoring Program.

What is your favorite activity to do together?

So many things! We love going to the trampoline park and jumping around and it's a great chance for Soreya to practice her gymnastics. In the summer, you'll find us swimming at the lake, looking for fish. We love singing Disney songs, visiting the arcade, playing Mario Kart (Soreya usually beats Jennie), going to the fair and going on roller coasters!

Are you working towards any goals together?

We don't have specific goals set, but since we have been matched for three years, a big goal is growing and learning together as Soreya gets older and is learning more in school. Also, we're always trying to experience new activities together.

What is your favorite memory together?

One of our favorite memories is building a snowman together. It was one of the first snows of the year and we spent hours outside building a giant snowman and wrapping all of these winter clothes on him and then smashing it down once we were done. So much fun!

What are you looking forward to experiencing together?

We are looking forward to experiencing new activities like apple picking and ice skating! We've tried to do them a few times and it hasn't worked out so thinking this year we will!

Have you learned anything from each other that you’d like to share?

Soreya really helps me live in the moment and focus on the task that we're doing together instead of thinking about the other things I need to do that day or week. I'm thinking about what we're doing together and focused on spending the time we have together, actually together, and I think that's been really great to learn and work on.

We provide children with caring role models.

When children and teens have the influence of a caring adult, they are more likely to avoid risky behaviors and to focus on academics. Today's youth face a variety of challenges, and being matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister can help them navigate these challenges and reach their potential.
