November 2021

Hello Friends,

By now, you are probably familiar with our #LiftUpLittles campaign that was launched earlier this month! We are so excited to be working to #LiftUpLittles and help the hundreds of children in our communities who need a mentor. Please join our effort by taking the first step and visiting our page here to learn more. You can also learn more about the campaign below!

Also, our virtual fundraiser, the Big Night In, is officially kicked off! The Online Auction opened on November 10th and will be available through November 18th. We encourage you to check out the amazing auction packages and then join us for a virtual show at 5:30PM on November 18th. The show will be live-streamed from our youtube page. To register and learn more, visit here.

We'd also like to make you aware of an educational opportunity hosted by the Metrowest Chamber of Commerce. The chamber is hosting their Annual Meeting on Wednesday, November 17th from 6:00PM-7:30PM. One of our Board Members, David Podell, President of MassBay Community College, will be speaking. Mr. Podell will be speaking about utilizing community college graduates and interns to help fill your open positions. If you are interested, you can learn more here.

Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,
The Team at Big Brothers Big Sisters

#LiftUpLittles Campaign

Join us as we #LiftUpLittles

National events over the last few years have taught us that too many youth feel isolated and ignored. They experience discrimination. They hear hateful language. They fear for their futures.

We also know strong relationships carry us through difficulties – and allow us to build compassion and resilience. We see that every day at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass & Metrowest. That’s why we’re launching the #LiftUpLittles campaign to highlight the importance of mentoring in combating the reality of discrimination and inequality.

Please join the effort in one of three ways:

  • Share Your Story. To help others understand the need and the challenge, share your story of a mentor who helped you.
  • Lend Support. To help build a community of caring, make a gift to support Big Brothers Big Sisters’ work in Central Massachusetts.
  • Be A Big. To help a child make a connection and rise above, volunteer to be a mentor – just an hour a week.

Program Highlight

Costumes were donned and spirits were high as our GEM (Girls E-STEAM Mentoring) team converged on the Ecotarium, Worcester’s interactive science museum and zoo, for a glorious afternoon of Halloween-themed exploration and discovery. These matches spent the day watching live mountain lions roam their habitat, participating in dry-ice-bubble science experiments, zooming between the museum’s many interactive exhibits, and (of course) collecting candy all along the way. The event was especially momentous because it was the first time ever that our GEM Littles and Bigs were meeting in person! The GEM program began in the early months of 2021, still deep into lockdown, as a way for female-identifying Littles interested in careers in STEAM to be matched with female-identifying Bigs in STEAM fields, and these matches continued their virtual meetings until this very day. The Halloween theme was taken very seriously by all: Bigs, Littles, and staff all showed up in some wildly imaginative costumes, ranging from the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper, Cleopatra, two foxes, a dinosaur, and even an old grumpy cat lady. After some pizza and a train ride around the museum property, we were all exhausted and ready to head home for the day. Thanks again to the Bigs and Littles who came for an unforgettable day!

Match Spotlight

Meet Angela and Jade! Angela and Jade were matched in 2019 and we love getting updates from their fun adventures!

Most recently, the duo visited Salem together! They visited Miss Havisham's Parlour, toured a haunted house, took in a haunted magic show, and enjoyed a delicious lunch. Sounds like a festive-good time!

Mazie Mentoring Program

The Mazie Mentoring Program will be hosting their bi-annual Match-Up Days this November! Match-Up Day is when all new mentors and mentees will meet for the first time and start to build their relationships. Matches will participate in fun activities to get to know one another. Marlborough High’s event recently took place on November 6th at 10am and Framingham High’s will be November 13th at 10am.

If you're interested in learning more about the Mazie Mentoring Program, please email mazie@bbbscm.org.
