Agency News

March 2022

Hello Friends,

Happy Spring! The sun is shining brighter, birds are chirping, and it seems that everyone is feeling happy and excited with the change of seasons. As the weather gets warmer, we love seeing our matches get outside and try some new activities. If you are a match and are enjoying the season, please keep us updated by sharing your photos! You can post photos here or email them to James.Nightengale@bbbscm.org.

Coming up in the month of April, the local Stop & Shop on Boston Tpke in Shrewsbury will be selling re-usable grocery bags and a portion of those sales will support our agency. So if you are local to Shrewsbury, be sure to stop by for a new grocery bag.

Thank you for your continued support!

Program Highlight

We are excited to share that our mentoring program with the Worcester Red Sox employees has officially kicked off! Since last Fall, we have been interviewing the Woo Sox staff members who have signed up to be mentors and have matched each new Big with a student at Gates Lane Elementary School in Worcester. Now, Woo Sox mentors visit their Littles weekly to play games, chat, work on homework together, or whatever activity they choose!

You can read more about the program in the Worcester T&G article here.

Match Spotlight

This month we'd like to shine a spotlight on a match in our community-based mentoring program. Meet Jodie and her Little, Aidreanna. This awesome match has been a pair since 2015 and are always finding new activities to do together. A perfect example of that is a class they took at the Enchanted Gift Loft in Oxford. At the class they learned how to make wire rings. From the photos it looks like they mastered it!

Mazie Mentoring Program

One of the things that makes our Mazie Mentoring Program different from our other mentoring programs is the requirement for matches to take part in community service activities each year. We recently hosted an event for matches to accomplish this. On February 23rd, it was National Letter to an Elder Day so we invited Mazie matches to our office to write letters that we could send to some elders looking for a pick-me-up. We used the Love for our Elders website to find a blurb and description about each elder we wrote to. We're hoping to hear back from some and start a pen pal relationship!

If you're interested in learning more about the Mazie Mentoring Program, please email mazie@bbbscm.org.

About the Mazie Mentoring Program

The Mazie Mentoring Program matches at-risk high school students in Framingham, Waltham, and Marlborough with dedicated adult mentors for their Sophomore through Senior years of high school. Its objective is to provide young people with the support to help them achieve their goals and succeed. Since its foundation in 1998, the program has served 1,000 students. Created to honor the legacy of John Andrew Mazie, the program is in its 22nd year of operation. Since 2017, the program has been operated by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass & MetroWest.

Stand With Us Today to Defend Potential

When children and teens have the influence of a caring adult, they are more likely to avoid risky behaviors and to focus on academics. Today's youth face a variety of challenges, and being matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister can help them navigate these challenges and reach their potential.
