Agency News

June 2021

Hello Friends!

Happy June and almost Summer! We hope you are all enjoying the warm weather and finding some time to relax with family and friends. The team at BBBS is also looking forward to the summer months. It is always a time for us to reflect on the past year and prepare for our upcoming programs that will begin again in the Fall.

This Summer will be one for transitions. As you may have read in a previous communication, our current CEO, Jeff Chin, will be stepping down to take a new position at the end of the month. Jeff has provided great leadership for the agency during his seven years with BBBS. He will be missed but we look forward to what the future holds. Interim CEO, Moe Boisvert, has already started his role and the search process for the next CEO has begun.

Also, June is Pride Month and we have enjoyed sharing some LGBTQ+ content on social media. We truly believe it is important to celebrate the differences that make us all unique. In honor of Pride Month, our LGBTQ+ Champions Group, published a blog post geared for Bigs about being an LGBTQ+ Ally. Check out the blog post here!

Thank you for taking the time to read our June newsletter and for standing with us to defend the potential of over 1,000 children!

Sincerely,
The Team at Big Brothers Big Sisters

Match Spotlight

Every child deserves a chance to see their potential realized. Matching children with caring, supportive mentors changes lives. It changes the life of the Little and oftentimes, it changes the life of the Big as well. Typically, in one year, our agency is serving about 1,000 matches. When thinking about the 1,000 Bigs who have signed up to be a Big and volunteer their time each month to spend time with a Little, we feel a sense of gratitude.

We recently asked, Big, Arin Whitman, to write a blog post for us about her experience as a Big.

Check it out here!

Program Highlight

You may be familiar with the Rodman Ride for Kids.  If not, it is an annual, noncompetitive charity bike riding event that takes place in Foxborough, MA. Last year, it was completely virtual and we were able to raise $110,000! This year, we're hitting the road again! There are options to register as a 25 mile rider, 50 mile rider, or Choose your own Adventure which is the virtual only option. You can do any activity you like as a Choose you own Adventure participant!

This year, Rodman for Kids, is offering an option that makes it easy for our Littles to get involved! On the registration page, a child under 18 can be registered as a Youth & Program Participant. A Big could register as a Choose your own Adventure participant and could participate alongside their Little! The Little could do some fundraising if they're comfortable doing so or simply keep their Big company while riding, walking, or doing whatever that adventure may be!

Join us for Mazie Day at the MetrroWest YMCA in Hopkinton on July 24th, where we will have outdoor activities, a MYSTEAM activity, food, and a celebration for our graduating senior matches. In addition, there will be Saturday events from July 10th-July 31st from 10am-2pm that all matches are welcome to attend. We cannot wait to see you soon!

About the Mazie Mentoring Program

The Mazie Mentoring Program matches at-risk high school students in Framingham, Waltham, and Marlborough with dedicated adult mentors for their Sophomore through Senior years of high school. Its objective is to provide young people with the support to help them achieve their goals and succeed. Since its foundation in 1998, the program has served 1,000 students. Created to honor the legacy of John Andrew Mazie, the program is in its 22nd year of operation. Since 2017, the program has been operated by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass & MetroWest.

Stand With Us Today to Defend Potential

When children and teens have the influence of a caring adult, they are more likely to avoid risky behaviors and to focus on academics. Today's youth face a variety of challenges, and being matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister can help them navigate these challenges and reach their potential.
