June 2021

Dear Big,

It's finally summer! The staff here at BBBS is excited that warmer weather is finally here! We hope that these activity ideas (both virtual and in-person) can inspire some fun times with you and your Little! We appreciate you taking the time to stay connected with your Little throughout the pandemic and we know that you're making a BIG difference in their life. We hope these activities get you and your Little excited about connecting with each other!

Warm Wishes,
The Community Team

Virtual Activities

Worcester Public Library Animal Origami

Get crafty and learn to fold cool creature creations using origami! Origami, the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, is a great way to be creative and show off those craft skills. Join this virtual event on June 17th at 3:00 p.m. to make animal-themed designs!

Learn to play the guitar!

Is your Little interested in music or learning to play an instrument? The Framingham Public Library has partnered with Centre Music House to offer guitar lessons for beginners.

Follow the library's Youtube channel to view the lessons. They're available 24/7, along with lesson plans and Q & A's.

In-Person Activities

In-Person (and virtual) Activity Ideas

As matches continue meeting in-person while maintaining social distance, it might feel overwhelming knowing which activities are encouraged and which are not allowed.

Find the updated BBBSCMMW list of approved activities for Bigs and Littles here.

Take and Make Kit: Fireworks Craft

Want to make your own fireworks? Visit the Framingham Public Library to get your own fireworks craft kit that you can take home and make with your Little! Sign-ups start on June 8th and pick up is on June 15th.

Owls Up Close

Have you ever wanted to see an owl up close? At the Worcester Public Library, you can! On Thursday, June 17th, you and your Little can join naturalists Marcia Wilson and Mark Wilson to meet 6 owls from the New England area. You and your Little will get to learn about their calls and habitats!

MYSTEAM Activities

Create Découpage Art

Upcycle some old frames, jars, vases (or just about anything else!) with découpage. This art form requires glue, a paint brush, and some form of paper you and your Little have on hand. Some ideas include using clippings from a magazine, wrapping paper, tissue paper, or cardstock. To learn more about how to découpage together, watch this video tutorial from the Discovery Museum. This activity is great because it can be done either in-person or virtually! If you and your Little craft together, we would love to see your final products!

Recipe of the Month

RECIPE: Watermelon Pizzas

It's summer, and that means warm weather is finally here! Cool off with this easy to make watermelon pizza!

Find the recipe for this sweet, yummy treat here.

Current Event Resources

Is your Little asking questions about what's going on in the world? Are they interested in learning more about the BLM movement?  Have they come out to you as queer or trans recently? Find some resources for talking to your Little about these important subjects below!

Looking to talk with your Little about race and the Black Lives Matter movement? Here are some great resources and a helpful video with advice for talking to children about race.

Clothing Donations from Cradles to Crayons

Cradles to Crayons' program Giving Factory Direct is ready to fill clothing orders for our families. The Kid Packs are designed for youth from birth to age 12. However, sizes range from preemie to youth 18/20, which is an adult medium, so it is likely that some of our older Littles will still be able to benefit from a clothing donation. We are also opening this program up to include our Littles' younger siblings, so please reach out to your match support specialist if you are working with a family who is interested in receiving a donation of clean, quality clothing.
